Whenever a customer asks me the best route to launching a website and gaining some valuable traffic, I normally recommended using search engine marketing (SEM - SEO and PPC) as this sends highly targeted, pre-qualified traffic to your site. Standard search engine traffic resulting from an keyword search is OK if you have a very high search engine ranking as you will see large amounts of traffic and a low conversion rate. So what's wrong with that? Organic search engine traffic, where you may have been lucky to get the number one spot on Google can change in a day! It is a mistake to rely solely on free traffic that may disappear overnight due to a change made by Google et-al. Also, it is harder to convert a browsing visitor from organic search into buying customer. Website visitors will be more included to purchase something if they have a reason for doing so. By combining SEO and PPC you have the perfect blend and if you can dominate the search engine result pages (SERPs) for both organic and paid search then all the better.

I have studied human psychology and social theory for many years and most interesting book on the subject of shopping has to be: Why We Buy: The Science of Shopping. Order the book today if you want to understand how and why people (yes, that's you and me) buy things. On consumer behaviour, the following links are also useful and understanding these processes will help you make better use of your marketing strategy. Priming involves different psychological aspects such as Metacognition and the Spacing Effect, whereby a person is influenced into making a decision based upon previous activities and the current task at hand.
