Facebook Like Button Error

Fri, 03/09/2012 - 09:53

After a couple of hours of struggling to find out why I was getting an intermittent javascript error that Firebug reported as 'FB.provide is not a function' that resulted in my Facebook Like button not appearing I found the root of the problem.

For some reason Facebook conversion tracking was causing a conflict. I don't use Facebook conversion tracking at the moment so deleted the offending script and my Facebook Like button now works fine - no errors and it is displayed on every page as expected.

Facebook Applications and Fan Pages

Developing fan pages and applications for Facebook is changing rapidly. The current implementation of FBML is to be deprecated in Q1 2011 and the new iframe development model will be rolled out across Facebook in the coming months.

This will make developing pages and apps for Facebook a lot easier than at present, where FBML is used for everything from simple javascript interactivity and SWF file includes to more advanced form controls and database driven apps.

Facebook YSlow me down?

Firstly, apologies for the blog post title! This cheeky little technique will really get your website humming if you are using the Facebook JavaScript SDK.

The script is really cool because it uses the jQuery code from my previous post about checking if all static content has loaded with jQuery and combines it with the W3C valid Facebook FBML code.

Facebook Like Button - W3C Valid

Thu, 05/06/2010 - 17:38

Update! I have created a new script called Multiple W3C Valid Facebook Like buttons that can be used as an alternative to the script below. Please try both scripts to evaluate the best one for your site.

Having spent the past couple of weeks creating new tools for my freelance user interface design work, I thought I would share some of my work amongst my blog followers and those struggling with the Facebook like button.
