The Beatles

Enterprise Drupal Migration, Rebuild & Long-Term Technical Delivery.

Overview

Working in close collaboration with Jeremy Neech, Creative Director of Apple Corps and owner of Motherlode Media, I led the end-to-end rebuild and long-term technical evolution of TheBeatles.com, transforming an ageing Drupal 7 platform into a modern, scalable, enterprise-grade digital ecosystem.

The project began with a full Drupal 7 to Drupal 8 migration, laying the groundwork for a smooth upgrade path to Drupal 10, a completely new Bootstrap-based front-end, and a suite of enhanced editorial tools and API integrations that now support some of the world’s most high-profile music campaigns.

This multi-year partnership demonstrates my ability to deliver complex enterprise Drupal migrations, engineer high-performance, resilient themes, implement flexible, editor-friendly workflows, and maintain extremely high-traffic platforms that must remain stable and performant during major global announcements and release cycles.

A Modern Drupal Architecture Built for Longevity

The original Drupal 7 site had accumulated years of technical debt, legacy content structures and large volumes of historical media. My first priority was to redesign the content model in a way that would make future upgrades and campaign activity far more manageable.

I consolidated and modernised content types, restructured fields, improved taxonomy architecture, and normalised legacy data so editors could work more efficiently. The extensive media library was reorganised and migrated into Drupal’s core Media system, enabling clearer media workflows and dramatically reducing duplication.

From there, I rebuilt the codebase around configuration management, version control and modern development workflows, a foundation that later made the transition from Drupal 8 to Drupal 10 extremely smooth and cost-effective. Custom modules were rewritten for future standards, deprecated patterns were removed, and the site’s underlying architecture was redesigned around performance, maintainability and scalability.

Bootstrap Theme Rebuild and High-Performance Front-End

With the back-end modernised, I delivered a completely new Bootstrap theme to replace the legacy front-end. This rebuilt interface introduced a faster, more accessible, mobile-first design system that significantly improved the site’s performance and Core Web Vitals.

Using a new SCSS architecture and a refined component library, the front-end became lighter, more consistent and easier for content editors to work with across both evergreen pages and rapid-turnaround campaign content. The rebuild also supported the introduction of a more flexible layout system that performs reliably during global traffic spikes.

Flexible Editorial Workflows with Drupal Gutenberg

A major focus of the rebuild was improving how editorial teams create and manage content. I implemented Drupal Gutenberg to give editors a modern, block-based interface with reusable components tailored specifically for Beatles campaigns.

This reduced reliance on developer input, enabled richer page design, enforced consistent styling, and made it possible for teams to build visually engaging pages at speed which is particularly important during fast-moving campaign periods.

Integrations That Power Global Campaigns

The platform required a set of reliable third-party integrations to support marketing, reporting and digital activation. I implemented and maintained:

  • SendGrid, for transactional and campaign-specific email delivery
  • Matomo, providing GDPR-friendly analytics, custom event tracking and internal dashboards
  • Custom APIs, powering interactive experiences, campaign micro-sites and content syndication

These integrations formed a stable backbone for campaign operations, ensuring reliable communication, analytics and automation across all territories.

Eight Years of Technical, SEO and UX Support for Beatles Campaigns

Since 2017, I have provided ongoing enterprise-grade support for TheBeatles.com across every major Beatles release. This long-term partnership has included performance optimisation, caching and scalability improvements, structured data enhancements, SEO strategy, UX refinements, and continuous A/B testing for key landing pages.

My work has ensured the platform remains stable and responsive during enormous global traffic surges, including new album drops, anniversary campaigns, documentary releases and archival projects.

“Now And Then”: A Career Highlight

One of the highest-profile moments of this partnership was supporting the digital rollout of “Now And Then”, the final Beatles song. Working alongside our DevOps engineer, David O'Connell, I prepared the platform to withstand worldwide announcement traffic, optimised campaign pages for international search visibility, refined the UX to guide users through the release journey, and collaborated closely with campaign partners and record labels throughout the rollout.

The result was a smooth, stable, and highly visible launch for an historic moment in music history.

Impact

The rebuild of TheBeatles.com delivered more than just a software upgrade; it secured the digital legacy of the world’s most famous band. By moving from a fragile legacy codebase to a future-proof Drupal 10 platform, we achieved faster Core Web Vitals, stronger SEO foundations, and a dramatic reduction in technical debt.

For the marketing teams, the introduction of Gutenberg and streamlined media workflows reduced time-to-publish significantly, allowing for richer storytelling without developer bottlenecks. Most importantly, the site now offers unwavering stability during peak global campaigns, ensuring fans have a seamless experience when it matters most.
